300U Hyd. Screen Clean?

My "new" 300U hydraulic system is sick. The problem seems to be intermittant -- sometimes the loader moves OK, but sometimes nothing. Then after moving a few minutes, fine again. I thought it was a bad pump, but then (especially after seeing the price of a new pump) wondered if it could be water in the oil or maybe a clogged screen in the reservoir.

I'm planning to drain the reservoir and try to clean any filter/screen before replacing the oil.

Is there any trick to this? When the seat is removed and the top of the reservoir unbolted, is the filter/screen inside immediately accessible?

Any ideas on the best substance for resealing the "lid" on the reservoir when its bolted back on?

Any thoughts from someone who has been thru this little project before would be appreciated very much.

Thanks.

Bob Kirk

The screen is attached to the cover so be careful when you set it down. The cover is very heavy so have help or be ready for the weight. I used a hoist when putting it back on since there is no good way to get up close. My screen was so clogged that it had collapsed so be prepaired to buy a new one, they are available at the dealer.

Where get you purchase a screen? Is it a special order?

Thanks ...

Bob, I'm about to do that very thing, probably this weekend. If you have control valves mounted on the right side of the reservoir, they need to be unbolted, so be ready to get some O-rings for when you bolt 'em back up. If you have three valves, there will be a total of 18 O-rings, plus there are 2 more O-rings sealing the manifold that runs up to the pump, so don't start this job if you can't get to the hardware store. The reservoir top is actually the largest portion of the reservoir. There is a gasket between the two sections, it was about fifteen bucks at the Case/IH dealer. The last fellow that did mine used blue silicone sealer, and I got blue "sili-snot" kinda waving around in the reservoir, so I decided against that route for myself. The job of getting to the control valve bolts is a little easier if you take the fender off, but it might not be worth the hassle if the fender bolts are real tight and you don't have an impact wrench. Mine were tight enough I couldn't budge them by hand, but they came right off with the impact wrench.

You'll need to drain the reservoir before you take the cover off. The drain is on the left side below the forward attach bracket for the fast-hitch cylinder, or, if you have power steering, it's where the power steering return line hooks up.

Of course you don't have to unbolt the valves from the reservoir, you can just unhook the hoses. I guess I was just seeing what I have to do, since I plan on some other work at the same time. You still need to unhook the manifold that goes to the pump, though.
