When a clutch release bearing goes out what are the syptoms? I have posted several posts about the stuck clutch on my 184 Cub. I now think it is the release bearing because I can get the pressure plate off the disk slightly by prying.

Any help is appreciated as usual!!

Thanks for all the replies. I there is a repair manual for the 184 waiting for me to go pick it up. I also have a repair manual for the regular Cub and a parts manual, but the 184 is slightly different due to the electric PTO engagement system. It looks like an Auburn clutch, but different. Anyway the repair manual and this advise should help.

Thanks again...BB

The 184 has a release bearing like other IH tractors check to see if the release bearing fork has spread apart at the top ,if it has it canot engauge the pressure plate because the fork slides past its notches .I have seen a lot of 184s do this,if it has its an easy fix.

Binder, is you rr elease bearing a conventional type bearing that looks about like any other, or is it of the old graphite block type? If the latter it may be worn down enough that you're out of adjustment room. If it is a regular type bearing, it being bad wouldn't keep you from disengaging the clutch. It may be the fingers need adjusting like others have suggested, if the design allows for it. Just thinking back to suggestions some folks made about the similar problem redrev is having with his M clutch not disengaging (We're going to get after that, folks, as soon as his shop warms up!), is it possible your clutch disk is in backwards? If the splined center of the disk sticks further out one side than the other and you've got it on in the wrong direction, the longer side could interfere with disengaging. Something else to check out. Good luck. Scotty

BB, about a month ago I took apart a Farmall A that I thought had a bad release bearing. When I got it apart I found that the fingers on the pressure plate were out of adjustment and the plate couldn't release the disc completely. You could not shift that tractor without grinding no matter how long you held the clutch in.
I don't know if the pressure plate fingers on your tractor are adjustable or not, just an idea to look at.
Good Luck

Bad clutch throwout bearing will usually still release the clutch, it would make noise while the clutch was depressed though.

In your case I would suspect bent/broken fingers on the pressure plate.

Steven

Could be bent or broken fingers but they all look good to me. I have good access to the clutch because of the design on the 184...it has side panels.

I am really at a loss. I was sure the pressure plate had rusted to the clutch disk, but because I could pry it open enough to see it wasn't rusted it lead me to think release bearing.

AAAAAHHHHH HRRRRRGGGG!!!
