Sanity check on my 41 H

I just bought a '41 H. Prior to buying it I did all the due diligence I could and everything looked fine. The engine ran strong, no smoke, the shift box was nice and tight, the tin was good.

After getting it home and driving it around the block for the neighbors, I drained the oil. Lo and behold the first pint out of the pan was green! So I have a possible radiator-fluid-in-my-oil problem.

I'm new to Farmall's, so I'm looking for some sage advice on what I should be concentrating on. Here's my plan as it now stands:

1. refill the block with oil and run for a few hours
2. drain oil and look to see if its got anti-freeze in it
3. If yes, pull the head and replace the gasket
4. If I still have anti-freeze after replacing the head gasket, pull the engine and go looking in the block
5. rebuild the engine

I'm curious to know if the water jacket and oil galleys in the H engine are close enough to have a crack through one to the other. All experiences and opinions welcome...

thanks for the great advice. I won't get to it until this weekend, but I'll definitely do the pressure check and the ultraviolet dye. More later

just a thought ... you might try retorqueing the head befor you go thru all the other stuff. When ever you change a head gasket you need to retorque it after the engine gets warmed up. Maybe the last person didn't do it.

Art I hope it's not serious. If it is the seal or head it still won't be that bad. Get the head magnifluxed and you will know instantly if there is a crack. Magnifluxing can find the most minute crack and show it off. If the head seems ok get it planed and reassemble. Follow torque specs for the head. Best of luck and let us know how you are making out. Those H's are great tractors and when they are right they are hard to beat..Mike in Exeter Ontario

The first thing I would do is take the pan off and then put a radiator pressure checker on the radiator and pressurise it. I have a Stant and you can get it from an automotive parts house.Look up at bottom of block and if water is coming down inside of sleeve past rings its a gasket or cracked head. If its coming down outside of sleeve its a cracked block or oring on sleeve. Hope this heps you out.

A pressure check would be good, but there are no o-rings on the sleeves for a H so if there is anti-freeze leaking around the sleeve during a pressure check, then your block is cracked.

Also, If there was a crack near an oil galley, there would be oil in the water, not water in the oil.

I would retorque the head then pressure check and see if that fixes it. If not the head is most likely warped or cracked.

Good luck

That's an excellant suggestion... but if I may...
they have a product that they sell at most parts houses... Ultaviolet dye... shows up under a black light. Maybe use that along with the inspection route.
good luck
