Alternator Question

I have a Delco alternator on a Case Model 580 backhoe Loader (not a Farmall, darn). The voltmeter shows no charge and connectiong a voltmeter to the battery and increasing engine RPM does not show an increase in voltage. Looking at the back of the alternator the Bat terminal is at about 10 oclock position. At twelve Oclock is a connector (push on two terminal) labeled 1 and 2 the # 1 terminal labeled R is connected to the battery terminal connector on the alternator. The # 2 terminal (label not readable) has a wire hanging out of the connector that is not connected to anything. I do not know if the alternator has built in regulator or not. I haven't found an external one. Will appreciate any help.

Thank you very much for the information. I now have the wires hooked up correctly. No charge yet. Will do some troubleshooting to find the culprit. You were right about a botched job. I have found that many other things do not seem to work. Electrical that is. Sure would be nice to get an electrical diagram for this machine.

I will guess the hanging wire was used to excite the alt. Just touch the battery terminal on the alt. with the engine running and it should charge.
Can't leave it connected to batt. term or it will discharge when you shut it off. That is what the acc. side of ign. switchis for. At least you can find out if it charges.

Sounds like you're dealing with a botched wiring job! If the two alternator aux terminals are parallel (like this: - - ) and on the outside edge of the alternator you have an internally regulated unit. It should be wired as follows -

BAT - Heavy wire to the ammeter (or direct to the battery + if there's no ammeter)
#1 - To the SWITCHED side of the ign switch thru a warning light (or thru 10 ohm resistor if there's no alternator warning light). The switched side of the ign switch is usually marked IGN or ACC
#2 - To the alternator BAT terminal.

If the aux terminals are parallel (like this: | |) and in go into the back of the alternator, the alt's externally regulated. It will require a separate regulator plus interconnecting wiring. Best bet is to spend $35 or so and replace it with an internally regulated unit.

Hope this helps...
