Finally living my dream - got 200 acres and starting farming this year. Bought a 966 with Farmhand 348 loader/grapple from a fellow. I am not up at the place yet so I had my Dad (retired dairy farmer) look it over. Seems as though it has had good care so we bought it. I am going up Wednesday to disk and plant hay but, my Dad and Uncle (both in there 70s') couldn't stand it and went and picked up the tractor and started disking today. They are like kids with a new toy - it is fun to see them excited about it. I am excited getting to farm but I think they are even more so. Anyway Uncle got to a soft spot and started spinning so he went to raise up the disk and it would not lift. Nothing would work with the loader either. Any ideas what happened? We put a new cylinder and lines on the disk and the previous owner just serviced the tractor this morning. I wonder if air could be in the pump from the new cylinder / lines? Can that happen? Worst case I guess I will need a hydraulic pump. Any idea what that will cost worst case? Do they have to split the tractor or are the pumps accessed through another place? Thanks for any advice.

I'm in here late,but I have one other thing you may want to check.You said it was serviced,was a new hyd filter put in?If so check to see if o-ring on cover got pinched.This will cause air leak on suction side of pump.It could cause symptons you described.

They swapped the hycradulics hoses, (Farmhand and disc)and everything worked. Not sure why that is but it all worked out and they got about 30 acres disked too! Thanks for all the advice from everyone.

Are all your hydralic hoses plugged in properly and locked in the correct position?

Andy;

I think they were - they said they cycled the cylinder on the disk up and down several times.

Thanks

Be sure to pay close attention to the o-ring between the pump mounting plate and the rear frame of the tractor. Sometimes the port in the plate and in the frame of the tractor are not in alignment and this will cause the o-ring to blowout. If this is the case I usually have the recess that is in the mounting plate machined wider to accept a teflon o-ring. The teflon o-ring is the one used between the rear frame and the rear frame cover. After this fix the ring will not blow again.

Brian, let's hope I can help with this. If it lifted that disk good at start, more than likely you sheared the hydraulic pump, gear key. I know your anxiuos to find out where it's at right? Well you have to bear with me here it's been awhile since I did one. So here goes, across from the hydraulic filter-other side of tractor is a casting with I don't remember how many bolts around outside. It is sort of rectangular shape. Be sure and have something to drain at least 15 gallons of HY-TRAN in, and be sure and keep it clean for later install. As you remove that casting be prepared as it is heav--vy, don't smash the fingers. Their are dowels along with the bolts, so you will need a gasket, and don't drop cross tube to filter housing, as that has to be in place when installing. Their on back side you will find the little critter that does all the work. More than likely the gear will spin free on shaft. Seems to me it's keyway is about 1/4" or 3/16" square. Had a small screwdriver I used to make them out of when I didn't have one along on service calls. Long post I know but such is life. Good luck and let me know what you find.

I want to start answering your question with a question. Will the 3 pt hitch go up and down? It runs off the same pump which is located under your left foot down low in the rear housing and no you don't have to split the tractor.

Scott, my uncle said he didn't try the 3 pt. Also said he couldn't get it into low or high range after that either!!?? The previous owner said the shifter sometimes sheard a roll pin though. Can't understand the connection between the shifting and the hydraulics unless something major is busted in the trans.
Thanks;

Had another brainstorm. Make sure the remote levers are working properly. Had one to hang down in the float position and it felt like the lever was moving the valve but it wasn't.
