The A runs rough. Why would this be ?

Finally took the A out of the garage today, and now I have more questions.

1. The valve in one of the rear tires (which is liquid filled) is stuck. It leaks out the liquid, and I can't pump air through it. I'd like to remove valve and fix/replace it. However, I'm not sure how the stem works. It appears that the stem screws into a base ? The base appears to be like a bulk head fitting. Can anyone tell me what the best way to get this task done ? I expect that everything is corroded, and the last thing I want to do is break something worse than it already is.

2. The motor idles relatively well, doesn't smoke and starts easy. However it does skip and miss when it's under load such as going up an incline. When it does miss there is some white smoke that comes out. I've cleaned the carb, changed the wires, cap and rotor. I have not cleaned the points or changed the plugs. I also have not adjusted the timing since the tractor ran fine when it was put away 10 years ago.
The other thing that puzzles me is the popping sound it makes, I believe it is coming out the air filter. This makes me think it is backfiring through the carb ??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Brian: I don't like white smoke in your question #2. White often relates to water turned to steam. Leaking head gasket? The mis under load is another poor thing to have. Many possible things. Bad plugs\points maybe. A plug takes more to fire when under higher pressure from a heavy load. A load often uncovers the faults in a weak system. But the smoke bothers me more. Black would have possibley been too rich fuel mixture. White is water. Popping in air filter could be burnt INTAKE valvue or mis adjusted valves. Many ytmag post talk about resetting valves. Easy to do cold non running. Try that? Too loose is better than too tight. Ya may consider retorque the head bolts just befor setting valves. Head gasket leaking water for that white smoke? I don't like that white smoke. G.

Brian: Your valve stem is two piece, stem with valve, screws into base attached to tube. If this has been weeping all those ten years you will probably have to put an entire stem on the tube. They go on just like a patch or replace the tube. New tube aprox. $25. If I were you I would get rid of that calcium chloride unless you are going to do some heavy pulling. If tractor has been sitting ten years put in new plugs and points. Is this tractor by any chance magneto? Sounds as though your timing may be off a bit to. I always time my tractors by sound. Just get tractor running at idle and move it from one extreem to the other. You will soon be able to tell by sound where right point is. If these tractors are off by much they wont start. Hugh
