When it is cold and i crank my 966 none of the hydralics work. It won't move or steer. It has to run for 30 min. sometimes before I can steer it. If I park the front end down hill overnite it runs fine. What's causing this?

We had the similar thing happen on one of our 1066 about 10/11 years ago. Till it warned up (10/15 sometimes 30 minutes) the T.A. was stuck in low, the steering was hard to turn and the brakes were weak. Once it warmed up everything worked fine. This would even happen after the hydraulic filter was change. When we removed the mcv plate to look at the steering pump. We found the keyway was sheared off on the pump. And after warming up it would finaly snag and drive the pump. We also say that the steering pump showed alot of wear so it was replaced along with repacking mcv block. Its been working fine since then.

good luck

Thanks, I'll give that a try and see what happens. That sounds like a good possibility. This tractor has run a couple hours a day for over 25 yrs. I use it to dig silage out of a pit. ANDY

That 1066 we have is getting old but still going. She got a fresh engine and turbo a few years back and is expected to earn her keep for some time yet. When they brought her home new in the fall of 1973 my older brother's would not even let me drive her for about a year. It was our first diesel tractor and thy didn't trust a 14 yrs old on it yet. But I had already learned to disk and cultivate with the old 806 gas. Use to get me mad when they let my first cousin ,1 1/2 yrs older drive it. I thought I could run it as good as him. But since then have spent many hour driving a 1066 my favorite tractor. By the way we have three of them. Two 1972's and one 1973.

Bought the 966 new in 1972. I also have a couple 1066 and a 5488. The 966 is my favorite. My dad bought a couple of 560's in 1962. We ran them for years until we bought the 966 and I thought it was the biggest tractor I ever saw. The 560's are gone, wish I had them back.

If its cold and hydraulics are erratic its probably water in Hytran, take out filter and see if water/ice in housing, examine color of Hytran to see if discolored, genuine will hold some water in suspension, it will be creamy if overloaded. The first thing to try is new Hytran & filter. This system holds about 22 gallon with filter change.

You didnt say if the rear couplers & hitch are not working or if the steering/TA-brakes system has stopped, if both have stopped the pumps draw Hytran from a common reservoir, however there are still 2 separate systems. Front pump in MCV on side of clutch housing runs steering/TA-brakes, rear pump below left brake runs rear frame hydraulics, hitch & couplers. If both have stopped would recheck oring & gasket on hydraulic filter cover, can have vacuum leak.

Rear couplers and hitch both work. Power steering and transmission don't until the tractor has run about 30 minutes and then works fine the rest of the day.
