I have a 1942 Farmall H which orginally had steal wheels but has since been converted to rubber.I found out that the gearshift lever goes into 5th but the tractor won't move, then I was reading the manual about a 5th gear lockout screw and it said something about taking it out and replacing it with a shorter one to enable 5th gear. I am not sure where the screw is located. If anyone could give me an idea, I would really apreciate it. Thanks!!

Bob the 5th. gear lockout screw, as it is called in the parts book, is located just forward of and slightly left of the gearshift base. When you select 5th., the left shift fork moves forward to engage 5th. gear. That lockout bolt prevents that fork from moving forward.

Bob,

On my 1939 M, the lockout screw is located under the rear gas tank support. The bolt was located directly in front of the shift lever, and the bolt had almost rusted into the transmission deck cover. I had to use a cold chisel to remove it. There was no head left on the bolt itself. However, the purpose of the bolt was to keep the shift linkage from going into 5th. It sounds like your tractor is going into 5th, I hope you don't have any larger problems. If you can get the bolt out, replace it with a bolt that is about 1.5" long. That should fix the problem. Good Luck!! I enclosed a picture of the bolt I removed from my tractor and the hole it came out of. You might have to cut and paste the address of the picture to see it.

Take care,

Now, I'm curious. Does the M have a similar lockout bolt? I'll have to look for it. Tried fifth the other day, and had a similar problem. Didn't try very hard, though. I was really looking for third. :-)

Dan,

The tractor I was talking about was an M, I think the H is similar. If it won't engage into 5th, don't break the shifter, just remove the bolt that is beneath the rear fuel tank support. Ask if you need anything else.

Dear Jared,

If the lockout screw is in place should the shifter be able to move into 5th? Because on my tractor the shifter goes into the 5th gear position (I think Over to the right and down) but when you let the clutch out the tractor does not move but the transmission does not grind either. My grandfather bought this tractor brand new and claims it never had 5th gear because it was orginally on steel. I will take a look and see if I can find the bolt you were talking about. Thanks!!

Bob,

If the factory lockout bolt is present, it shouldn't be able to go into 5th. If the lockout bolt has been changed to a shorter bolt, then it should be able to go into 5th. I guess there's a possibility someone took 5th gear out of your transmission to save weight or some other reason, but it sounds like there isn't even a 5th gear in the tranny. But, with the presence of the long factory lockout bolt, the shifting forks will hit on the bolt keeping it from going into 5th. Good luck finding anything tomorrow.
