How much of a job is it to replace a leaking rear main seal on a H. Motor runs excellent, no smoke just leaks at rear main. Do I have to split the tractor to repair?

Are you sure it is the rear main and not the seal on the belly pump or the front of the transmission? If you aren't, remove the clutch cover off the bottom, block the wheels and crawl under there with the tractor running. you may spot one or all of the other seals leaking. That could be your leak, or you may want to change them while things are at least partially apart. Doc

Hi Ben,

I "thought" that I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago with my "H". I guess it's "a piece of cake", if you have the wheeled dollies that can bolt to the frame of each section. Yes, it does have to be split in two :-( The seals aren't bad, they are half moon shaped felt and run about $2 - $3 each here in PA, so about $6.00 plus shipping from my supplier. But ... here was my catch ... my tractor was parked on a slope for about a month facing uphill, so most of the oil ran to the back of the engine, that and I had it overfilled by a bit over a quart. I parked the tractor on the level, and drained the excess oil, let it set for about a day ... and not much of a problem since. But, I do keep a close eye on it. Good luck and let me know the outcome. Greg

Yes, you will have to split the tractor. The clutch/flywheel and oil pan will need to be removed to access the seal covers.
