I have a 1942 farmall h and i'm getting ready to paint it. I was thinking of using either Napa brand paint or PPG Ditzler. Has anyone ever used these paints before? How much of a price difference is there between them? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

One other suggestion is to use the IH #50 color. I believe the PPG Omni number is 70019. It doesn't have as much yellow as the later color. I have sprayed both and the #50 fits the old H's and M's better. This is also referred to in Guy Fay's book on the lettered series tractors. You may spend a bit more. But when it comes to a good paint job, you really do get what you pay for.

For me, it is not about price, it is about quality. I have been more than pleased with PPG acrylic urethane paints. They go on easy, dry fast, and look great for many years! I am not a pro by any means, more like still an amateur who still does a pretty fast job of painting. We spent about 2 to 3 days total on the examples shown below and they turned out great.

I will use nothing but PPG if I have to pay for the paint. If someone else is paying me to do a job they can choose the paint, because I'd love to get paid to do it over in a couple years!

Super MTA painted last summer in 2 days time, still shines like the day we painted it.

544 painted last summer about a week after the SMTA. I think we spent 3 days on this one.

Painted summer of 97 has NEVER been in a garage since and still looks like the day we painted it. Look at the reflection on the door of the ground and snow, and we haven't even washed it yet! Remember, red paint fades the fastest.

Thanks for the input Steven. I have talked to other people and they seem to agree with you, but could you tell me about how much a gallon of PPG IHC red costs? Also is there any place on the internet to buy PPG paint or do I have to find a dealer somewhere.

I think the IH red that I used was around $45 a quart or so, plus reducer and hardener. I painted the SMTA with a quart and the truck with a quart also. I use a High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) gravity feed gun. See link to buy online.

I have also used thier enamel paint with good success too. I have yet to try the base coat clear coat because I'm pretty sure I would get runs in the clear. Maybe on my H if I can afford it...

Dunno how to get it other than at my dealer, I think Dave_ID has a better supplier than me though - cheaper anyways, you could post asking for him.
