Who said IH had to make sense? To my knowledge, there weren't consecutive letters assigned. I think they spaced them out to sort of indicate horsepower range, but that's pure conjecture. There was a Farmall E prototype in the 1941-1942 era, it was basically the Farmall C prototype, but with a live PTO.

Some were used in different applications, and perhaps they didn't want to confuse us any further. D as in MD diesel, F was used in F12,F14,F30,F20,, and the I was used in the Industrial versions. Anyone else for the E,G,J,K,L?

I believe M tractors have FBK in the serial number. Possibly had a designation change from K to M after tooling was started but before production began. G was already in use by Deere and MM? L was already in use by Case and Deere? Your guess is as good as mine.
