Does the float in the carb of a H have to be set to specification? Because I was taught that as long as the float is level to the carb. body it was okay. Is this right or not? What symtoms could the float out of adjustment cause? Thanks!

The specification is 1-27/32" from the bottom of the float (in the 'up' position) to the machined surface of the top half of the carb. It is easier to measure if you turn the upper casting upside down on the bench and measure from the machined face.

The float level is important for reasons previously stated and because it needs to be able to move freely in the bowl. If the float is too low, you won't get full power from your engine because gas can't flow into the jet area fast enough. If the fuel level is too high, it will take less vacuum from the venturi to get fuel into the manifold causing the engine to run too rich.

I've wondered about that myself. I've been a small engine mechanic and worked on a lot of different size engines and I was taught to set the float level to the carb body by several old mechanics. I've never had one that that float setting didn't seem right.... or maybe I've just been lucky? :)

If the float is set too high, Gas will run out of the drain hole in the inlet to the carburator. the engine may smoke black and run really rich or flood out.
I have to find my service manual to check the float adjustment. as memory serves me i think it is as you said , the float is level with the carb body, but my memory doesn't serve me too well lately!
