My H has the the paper belt pulley and I'm getting ready to paint the tractor. I have seen some tractors have the paper part of the pulley painted black and others paint them red or leave them how they are. Which one is the correct way? thanks!

The lamnated paper pulleys were a sort of light brown and had a sort of tanning shellac on the outside surface and were painted on the inside. Naturally, the surface wore off from use and exposure and ours got coated with belt dressing a little. For restoration just cleaning it good and using a clear coat of some kind to protect it should look right. Just like the axles, painting them red isn't exactly right even if it does protect them, flat black is better than that.

I painted the belt surface on the one on my MD black because I thought it looked more authentic. Don't know what color they were from the factory, but the one back on the farm was black becauae of the belt dressing that was used which was some kind of sticky stuff like tar or something.

I would have thought that they came from the factory painted red. It seems that IH taped off very few items before the tractor was sprayed so I think almost everything with a couple of exceptions, gauges, steering wheel, and seat was painted red. Good luck. SAm in NS

I think they came from the factory red, from looking at old photos.

I've got one that came w/44 H when it was new. Inside is red, outside has all traces of paint gone, but we used it a lot when I was a kid. Metal edge is definately red. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

There is a picture of what appears to be a new H on the cover of Guy Fay's tractor data book. The paper is not painted on this tractor.

someone said that tractor restoration is part art and I agree. I never paint the face of any pulley because I think they look better that way and we all know what opinions are like.

if you dont paint it then maybe you should consider coating it with some oil to preserve it better, maybe linseed or old motor oil, it will look used and be protected.

yeah. I've done that. even WD-40 sprayed on a steel pulley will keep it from rusting between shows.
