I've been working on a 330 that I bought at an
auction last fall. Recently did some work, took
it for a spin around the pasture, and it died.
Wouldn't start back up. It turned over a few
times, then acted like the battery was dead. Let
it sit for 10 to 20 minutes, hit the starter again
and it started right up. Parked it for a few
days, and now it won't start again. Today it
turned over several times, then it wouldn't crank. The battery is fully charged and was put in new
before the auction. Looked at my operater's
manual and it appears the battery was installed
incorrectly. According to the manual, it should
be positive ground. It had been wired with
negative ground. Any ideas why it would run
before and not now? Is there likely any damage
from being connected backward? I haven't had a
chance to reconnect the battery yet.

better check your regulator tractor is supposed to be positive gnd it will usually say which gnd the reg wants to be then polarize the gen by momentary touching a lead from the ARM post on the gen to the BATT term on the reg hope you didnt shell out the reg by running the neg gnd but you probably did after you get it running again and if it doesent charge ground the field term on the reg and then if that makes it charge the reg would be bad if it doesent charge then the gen is bad lots of people make the gnd wrong when changing batts as they just dont understand then get carried away and go to 12v so they can spend more money

Brad,

Wether the battery is positive or negative ground should not make a difference if the tractor runs or not. If it did your tractor wouldn't have started to begin with. What this will affect is the charging system. I am not totally up to speed on this part as to the changes needed. This winter I changed my SMTA from 6v positive ground to 12v negative ground with the help of Bob M's wiring diagram. Search the archives for it or maybe Bob himself or someone more familiar can help you.

Good luck, boog
