My 706 looks like a diesel when running from a distance. Thank God for Champion "21" spark plugs. They do not foul. This all started one year ago when planting. It drank oil and began smoking. I used it on the corn dryer and I almost ran it out of oil. It would go through 3 - 4 quarts in a couple of hours. When I began to investigate I found the air cleaner breather tube behind the grill filled with stems, leaves, and milk weed seeds. It certainly would have caused a great restriction. Well that helped when I removed that stuff. But, it is up to its old tricks again. Smokes quite a bit when idling. Goes away mostly when warmed up. I think that is mainly due to the fact that the oil sort of burns up. Has decent power. Still uses oil. Help !!!! What can be wrong. The engine had new sleeves, pistons and rings 5 years ago. Not that many hours on the motor. Could it be valve seals? Valve guides? Broken rings? Maybe it is just worn out again? It did take some water down the muffler once and I tried to start it. Would the water in the cylinder(s) put pressure against the rings and snap them? I would like to do some trouble shooting before I tear it down. Also, only 2 or 3 cylinders would foul the plugs. She is a good looking 706 and I use it to chore with and light field work. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ... andy

I would run a compression check first. It could have stuck some rings when it took on water if set in there very long.
