I have a 42' farmall h which just had an engine overhaul and the carb. rebuilt. I checked valves and timing and I'm sure it is right, but when it is running it hunts and pops but I think it is running on all four cylinders. I thought maybe a carb adjustment? But when I turn either screw in or out they don't seem to do anything. Could I have put something in the carb. back together wrong? Has anyone else ever had anything like this? Thanks!! Bob

I am sure the cam and crank are in time because it ran fine after the rebuild until I took the magneto and manifold and carb. off to paint the tractor. When I put them back on I couldn't seem to get it running just right. I think I will try the aceytlene test around the manifold. Unless I don't I have the mag. timed correctly? Thanks!

Bob, the poping tells me that it is getting air where it should be a fuel mix. I set one of my H's up according to the manual only to find that these H's have a mind of their own and I had to use more turns on the set screw to get it to run right. I don't want to flog a dead horse because you said you think its carb, but are your manifold bolts torqued correctly, if it is getting air through the manifold gasket, carb adjustment won't phase on it. I use acetylene or a propane torch, unlit and just hold it around the manifold with the engine running...if it smooths out and begins to run better then you know it is a manifold leak and you need to check the gaskets or look for a cracked manifold. One of my H's wouldn't run right and after the acetylene test I discovered a crack which a shop welded up with cast rod. Now the tractor runs properly. Good luck with the H from Mike in Exeter Ontario
