I have an estimate to have a 45 Farmall H engine and head completely redone with all new parts and professionally cleaned for between $1500 and $2000. How much would I need to spend if I done this all myself? Keep in mind I will have the head done in an engine shop and the block cleaned as well. I am going to save any money or not?
thanks

B.T.D.T. I paid close to that and did the dissassembly/reassembly myself. Pay the man and hope everything is salvagable in your motor. Let us know.

I am not sure but I think a engine rebuild kit from the internet is bout $500 or so, + machine shop work + extra stuff you find. SO I would say $1000. It helps to be rich and pay for engine rebuilds, but if your one notch above poor (like me) then you have to think about it.

My first response is 'bout half that. But...it also depends on what else you find wrong when you get there. On my '47 H it turned out to be EVERYTHING! It hasn't been a restoration, it's been a resurrection. Anyhow, even after having the block cleaned, I would suggest you put it on an engine stand and take it to a car wash and blast all the sediment out of the water jacket you can with it upside down. You'll be amazed at what will come out of it.

My 44 H just ran me about 1800 but I bought most of the parts from bermuda ken (case) and I did put the Larger IH Fire craters in it and rebuilt everything including the govener, oil pump, clutch etc, on the heads just planed a little and valve seals and guides crank went 10/10 and everything was hot tanked you really are better off doing it yourself if you have the time and skills. the knowledge can be aquired from this site and most of the good people here. For my self now being disabled I had not done an engine since the 70's It was very rewarding, last Sat to fire the engine up and to it hear it purr like a kitten. This it self was worth it all... my $.01 worth..
