I have a 1944 W6 in good condition. The amp meter
seems to be ok, but I dont know what the round grey switch is supposed to do. The decal , if there is supposed to be one is missing. The switch has 3 or 4 positions, but I dont know what they do ...does anyone else have a McCormick that can tell me what each position is supposed to do??

Thanks;

Bill - Cedar Grove, Wi

I'll add to the other comments. The 4 position switch only does anything to the charge rate if you still have the cut out relay on your generator instead of a voltage regulator. If you have a voltage regulator or the tractor has been converted to an alternator, then the first two postions do nothing.(except they are the off position for the lights) The second two positions are dim and bright lights. The 4 position switches were used on tractors that had a cutout relay on the generator and no voltage regulator. The 3 position switches were used on tractors that had a voltage regulator.

Bill, The Red is right if you have a 4 position switch. But you said you might have a 3 position switch which is just a light switch. Moving clockwise the first position is OFF, then DIM and finally BRIGHT. Both 3 & 4 position switches can be found on IH tractors.

Bill that should be similar to the H light switch. For 1944, I would guess you have a 4 position light switch. With the switch turned as far left as you can go, you are on low charge. Next position clockwise is high charge. Next position is dim lights. Last position is bright lights.
