Wheel bearings/seals: Can anybody help?

I'm replacing the front steel wheel hubs with round spoke wheels on my F30. I noticed that, even though the bearings are the same, the inside diameter of the round spoke hub is smaller than the steel wheel hub. Both hubs have a "ring" that is pressed into the hub on the inside end. Is this called the felt seal retainer? When taking off the steel wheel hub, I found an oil seal and a felt washer behind it. However, when I put the inner bearing on the axle and tried to put the round spoke hub on the shaft, it wouldn't go on because the seal wouldn't fit in the hub. Since I had a new felt washer and oil seal, I removed the original one (destroying it in the process),and removed the ring (retainer) from inside the hub, which I don't think I should have done. The round spoke wheel is now on, but does not turn freely. THe bearings are not too tight,
but I think the drag is caused by the new seal and felt washer, which is turning when the hub turns. Is it supposed to do that? Also, which way does the oil seal go on? I have it with the flat side out and the indented side facing the felt washer. I'm stumped as to how all this is supposed to go together and work. It looks simple enough, but I just don't get it. Any help would be highly appreciated. Pictures too, if possible. My F30 parts manual doesn't give a very clear picture of this.

The felt washer should not spin with the assembly. I purchased seals at a bearing store in Spokane, I gave them the old seal # off my IH seal, and they crossed it over. I got seals for my C that had 3 splines on the O.D. These seals cost about 1/3 what the old IH seals cost, and it didn't matter which direction these were installed. That seal cup needs to be removed before the bearings can be installed. You can get the right size bearings from your local bearing store, just give them the outside dim. and the axle dim that the bearing rides on, and they should be able to fix you up. The cost really adds up. I had to get the felt washers and the seal cups from IH, the rest of my rebuild came from Brown Bearing in Spokane. They have had every bearing, in stock, that I have ever needed. I hope this helped a little.....Dave

Dave: Thanks for your response. The bearings are OK. I cleaned the old grease out of them and repacked. The races are fine too. What's a seal cup? I didn't see anything like that in the assembly. The new seals I got are IH and yes they are expensive. #21.00 each. They are lip seals, and don't look anything like the original. Question: Should the felt washer and seal be installed in the hub first, or should they be put on the axle shaft before you slide the hub on? Thanks.

I can't say for certain on the F-30, but on the letter series tractors, the felt washer slide on to the axle first and rides against the casting. The seal went on the axle next, and bumps up to a shoulder on the axle. The seal cup is the sheet metal cup that goes into the wheel after the bearing and race are installed. I don't remember if the bearing will clear the cup or not, I know the race won't. The seal cup is what the seal rides on, and is a sheet metal piece that was manufactured with a draw die....

Dave: Thanks for your speedy comments. I appreciate it, and I think I'm beginning to sloowly understand. I take it that the seal cup is the metal "ring" about 7/8 in. wide that presses into the hub after the race is put in. Am I right about this? I did see a shoulder on the axle shaft, but it's pretty far in, which means that you would be squeezing the felt washer real tight. That would prevent it from turning, right?
Since the seal is a lip seal, should the lip be facing the felt or toward the bearing. I'm unsure about this, but there must be "right" way to install it. Thanks for your comments. Bruce

I suppose you don't want to squeeze the felt washer too tight, but it's not supposed to spin. And yes about the seal cup. I don't know what your seal looks like, my seal didn't make anydifference which way it was turned. Place the seal to contain the grease in the wheel.

I tried installing the other round spoke wheel I didn't do yesterday. The seal fits onto the axle OK,but there is no way that it is going to fit in
the seal cup. According the part no., I have the correct seal. WAs there a difference in the hub diameter between F20 and F30 round spoke wheels?
