I have been shopping for a used tractor. After consideration I have decided on a ih 544,574,or 584 or Massey Ferguson 165. I have driven all these models.I do not like the shifters on the 544, it also seems harder to start.I really like the 574 but like the 584 shifters better. The 544 and 574 has the d239. The 584 has the 203 or 206? Is their any real difference in power? I have heard good things about the 239, but I do not know about the smaller engine in the 584.

Does any one have advice on which model I should consider over the other?

The D-239 and D-206 are very similar engines. The only real difference is the length of the stroke. They are the four cylinder versions of the D-358 and D-310 German Diesels. I have experience with the D-358 and D-310 in a 786 and a 686. Both have nearly 7000 hrs. and still run like new. The German Diesels are well known for long life and fuel efficency. As far as which one to go with, I'd go for the 544, but I don't really have any experience with any of the others. If you want any of these to start easier, you could probably put in pistons from a very late D-358 when it comes time for an overhaul.

The 574 and 584 were only British from the flywheel back, the 4 pot engines were also made in Germany.....and they are a good engine.

K.B. - I've got a D206 and I bet you can't find an easier starter in a diesel anywhere (and I'm up in Canada where she sees minus temperatures 7 months a year!). There was some talk about balancer problems in the earlier 206's but I've luckily not had any problems (although I use the IH strictly for yard & some loader work so she's not overly worked). Good little motor.

I have a 574 we purchased new in 1973. It had its first and only overhaul in 1991 at 5400 hours. The sweptback front axle on the 574 is a plus when working in tight places. We replaced the seals in the master cylinders around 1988 other than that the brakes have never been touched and are still in excellant condition. Other than the clutch the only repairs have been waterpumps and alternators. I do need to replace some of the wiring, it was shortsided of IH to use wire insulation that would breakdown in 29 years on a tractor that would last 50 (ha ha). I have 4 tractors, but the 574 is my all around favorite.
