OK - As I understand it the two different size pre cleaners used the 1/2 pint and 1 pint jars. Was there just one brand of jar or were several brands used.

For some reason in the back of my mind I thought that Kerr square type jars were used exclusivelly.

Now on E-Bay I see someone is advertising Mason jars as orginial farmall equipment.

I've seen just about everything from jelly jars to plastic jars on them.

WHAT'S THE REALLY SCOOP????? ?????

so that's what that jar on my C is for!
I used it for canning green beans - as soon as we eat the beans I guess I'll put it back on the tractor. Or could I put it back on with the beans still in it?

Big John,

Here is a picture of my pre-cleaner assembly from my Farmall Super C tractor. It's the original glass jar, a Ball Perfect Mason ½ pint jar.

Most tractors spent their productive lives with whatever the farmer had at hand when he broke the first one.

For originality, therefore, I prefer an old scratched jar.

Mayonaise jars come with no impression so they are very neutral but are a little light if you are brush hogging around timber where a branch may catch it.

Nobody seems to know what the factory put on them. It was probably different in different years as they were probably bid out and different manufacturers got the bid.

Please note that IH did put universal threads on so the farmer did not have to go to IH to get their jar. That would not happen these days. Too much liability for the company if you used a defective jar, got cut, and sued them. So I enjoy using whatever jar is at hand in the true spirit of a well-designed, easily-maintained tractor!

Anybody who criticizes you for not having the "right" jar does not really know what the right jar is anyway so ignore them.

But plastic is a bit much.

Where are the jars on those tractors? Why would a tractor have a jar?

the jar goes on the air pre-cleaner. It creates a turbine effect so that most of the dust and debris drops out of the air and into the jar before entering the air cleaner. You have to take the jar off every once in a while to empty it. So, that is why there is a jar.

BigJohn: I don't fully agree with Will. The tractor jars do not have any method of measuring on them such as ounces or fractions of full.(not needed)
Next there are several vertical ridges placed around the outside to help keep your fingers from slipping. There may be more but I can't recall all this moment. The correct jar can be an issue at times. The IHC ones also most often have a very small J.Deere green tractor caught inside along with the other bugs. Gene.

Big John: Rather than let you be lured into a world of ignorance by some who prefer not haveing a clue, I checked mine on an early '48 Farmall C (#584th) which has very low time and all things are still stock. Very likely this is a factory jar regardless what the other poster preaches. It has 6 vertical ridges around the outside to help reduce fingers from slipping when turning. There are no numbers for any kind of measurments. The name "BALL" is in large script above smaller name of Perfect Mason. A small number 18 is on bottom edge and also on underside. Nothing else on it. I hope this helps inform. G.
