I am looking at a 544 and 574 IH. The 544 is in excellent shape. It only has 3000 original hours and is a one owner. The sheet metal is perfect. The dealer says everthing works and it appears to.He says if I can find anything wrong he will fix it.It is a really nice tractor for $4800. The other option is a 574 for $5000. I like the features of the 574 better. It is in ok condition but not nearly as good as the 544. It runs very well but dealer does'nt know orginal hours. Everthing works but left front wheel has some wobble. Tires on 574 are only 30%. The 544 is 100%. The 544 is an IH utility. 1968 model. The 574 features are much better however. Any opionions on what I should get? thanks!

I like the shifters on the side of the 574 much better than on the side of the hood.I also like the way the 574 pto engages better (lever on side of you versus behind operator). Also, 574 has wet brakes and strait front axle versus swept axle on 544. The 544 seems a bit more compact than 574 (which i like) it is a IH utility. Parts seem to be very hard to find for 544. The 544 also uses glow plugs (ehhhh!). However, the 544 is in almost perfect condition and there is something about not seeing many is very appealing! thanks for any input and opionions.

What? Are you sure it's a 544? No glow plugs there. Mabey it's a 504?

Yes, that is the only fishy thing about the tractor the dealer swears she has glow plugs. They say they were a factory installed option.I have never seen a 544 with glow plugs. What's going on here? I even went and bought a service manual and it mentions nothing about glow plugs on 544.The tractor has orginal 544 emblems and sure looks like a IH 544 utility. What do you think is the deal?

Mabey the dealer is mistaken or thinking of a different engine. We've got a 786 that has a D-358, which is the six-cylinder version of the D-239 in the 544, and also a 686 with a D-310, (same engine as the 358, just with a shorter stroke). I've been around the German Diesels for a long time, and have never heard of glow plugs being an option. As far as I know, they all had ether-assist, or at least it was an option. These engines are a direct-injection design, glow plugs are usally used with a prechamber injection head. The easiest way I can think of to rule out glow plugs, besides looking for any switches or buttons to control them,is to check for an ether-assist setup. Glow plugs and ether are never used together, because the glow plugs can light off the ether. I suppose someone could have dropped in a D-188 out of a 504, Better check the engine block for numbers, I think the D-239 had the engine model number stamped right behind the breather pipe. I suppose another possibility could be some type of aftermarket pre-heat manifold, although I have never heard of one.

I'll try checking for the either setup. From the outside the engine sure looks like the d239 used in the 574.I can sure tell by your posts that you sure know those german diesels.I'll post back as soon as i check the tractor again. Is it me or do the german diesels run more smooth and make more power than comparable engines? Thanks again for the help and knowledge!

Sounds like the 544 is in good shape and the dealer is really ready to stand behind it. 3000 hrs. is just getting that German Diesel broken in. I've always liked the 544, if it were me, and if it's in as good condition as you say, I'd go for it. What kind of features are you talking about on the 574?
