What exactly is the spark plug gap for? What will happen if the gap is too close? too far? Is better to have too close of a gap or a bigger gap? Thanks for any explanation!!!

On weaker or stock ignitions, opening up the gap CAN increase the spark kernel size, thereby creating a more efficient burn. The problem lies in that any added gap creates more strain on the other ignition parts.

Coils may not have enough stored energy to fire, or in the least case, not enough energy to cross the gap, creating a miss-fire. Plug wires will break down due to the added resistance as the spark tries to reach ground. Rotor and Cap, as well as points, and the carbon bushing in the center of the distributor cap will show early failures. All of this is because the greater the gap and the higher the voltage requirement to jump the gap. Do not forget the gap between the rotor arm to the distributor cap too. A high performance rotor is a bit longer at the tip, allowing less spark loss or chance of spark scatter in the cap as the spark attempts to jump the plug gap.

Dear Mark,

Thanks for the info. I have a 1942 farmall h with a magneto and was considering opening up the spark plug gap from 0.25 to 0.30 because I just put in stepped head pistons and the motor has a slight miss and I was told to open up the gap to make it stop missing. Do you think this would be a good idea or not? Any other suggestions? Thanks!! Any ideas would be appreciated!

Well I put new plugs in and new copper core wires and a new cap and rotor. Haven't got a chance to fire it up yet. but I'm hoping that the wires were my problem because I used a set of wires for a for a four cylinder car, and someone told me that only copper cored wires should be used on these old tractors. I don't know why but I guess it is because the new car wires are made of something other than copper. I'm not sure how this would effect the spark but that is what I was told. Does any one know why the copper core wires would make any difference? Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

Bob: You may have one item thats weak. One plug or one wire to the plug..or one cracked post on the mag that fires one plug.. or maybe it's one valve hanging up a little and not even a spark problem. This is where test equipment sometimes finds the fault quickly. The other method is to keep replacing items untill solved. A slight miss is hard to find via a forum but keep looking and asking. Can you isolate the miss to just one cylinder?? G.

Bob: You might check the discussion groups for the PULLING forum here on YTMag. Those guys have played with different pistons\compression and various plugs. It may take all good componets in the whole ignition system to stop that miss. G.
