Hi. My dad has an H that he needs to speed up the PTO shaft about 2X. Is this possible? If so what are the options? He will be using it on a sprayer unit for an apple orchard.(currently the Massey 35 is the only tractor that the pto is fast enough)..

if your "h" has a belt pulley ,i believe that thing turns just under 1000rpm versus the pto. you could hook up a pump off of that if its enough rpm...had to use a "sm" on a cyclo 900 planter one year and we made up brackets and adapter to run the pump for the planter off of there..worked well

JCM:

I told my dad the forum discussion responses up to this point and here is what he replied:

Thanks for the H info--good suggestions---Steven gave the best answer so we know a lot more now. The part that they did not know is that I cannot run the engine at high speed because it travels too fast in the lowest gear so the PTO speed is also down. If you can thank them for me. DAD

What I did due to the responses is locate a clutch pulley assembly on ebay that has a picture. I got a copy for him to look at. This may be the best solution.....

Brad
If you install a 9 speed unit in the transmission this will double the pto speed along with give you double the trans speed in the gears in 1 to 4 when you put it in 5 it will kick it back to regular drive. We have a 9 speed in a md and made the mistake of hooking it to the silo blower in high before and just about tore it apart at idle from to much speed. The is a few 9 speed units to be found and put in.

Too bad you can't power the sprayer unit from the belt pulley, it runs about 1100-1200 rpm.

You might look for an Industrial Salvage store in your area. Most major cities that have factories have one. stuff is pretty cheap. You might find a gear reduction there that would work. Run it in reverse.....

Wayland. Thanks for the idea of using a reduction gear in reverse. I will research this out and post results.

Hey Brad, my grandfather used a sprayer for an apple orchard with his H for over 20 years w/o problems, but he had a sprayer with a handgun type applicator and I am presuming that your dad is probably using a mist/blower type sprayer and therefore he needs the extra rpm. He might have already thought of it, but does the sprayer have any pully wheels for belts on it that could be changed to increase rpm within the sprayer unit? Dont know what kind of sprayer unit setup he has, but might be something to think about if you could rig something up like that.

I think when you put a 9 speed conversion on an M and run it in high range the pto turns double speed, along with the belly pump, for awile! then it burns up, finding the right pump to run at 540 would be your best option.

The PTO on an H will run around 600 RPM at full throttle with no load. I just checked mine the other day.

You have a few options: You could find a 2:1 gear box to hook up to the PTO or could devise a chain or belt drive with a 2:1 ratio to speed things up.

No modifications within the tractor's transmission would be possible without spending tons of money.

I don't think you are going to have much luck- you will have to cobble together another pto unit for the back with a gear unit probably. I think you could turn the engine up a few RPM's, but i'm not sure about twice the speed..... and the PTO unit is a direct hook to the shaft in the transmission. Maybe just some external chain drive thing to speed up the rpm's would work best, just any old roller chain should be able to transmit enough hp.

can you try mounting a sprocket and roller chain settup?
