Is it normal for a newly rebuilt farmall h to put out one puff of smoke as soon as it starts up? After it starts up there is no more smoke at all unless you jerk the throttle up real fast then it will put out one more puff of smoke but then will clear up.I don't think it is burning oil. The smoke is a greyish color.

My newly rebuilt H smokes alot, all the time, guess I let it sit too long. I am going to try to use it and see if the stuck ring clears itself up. any ideas? it sat about 2years form the time the head came off until the new head was put back on.Runs great otherwise and starts real good

If your concerned about it, which I wouldn't be, just put some umbrella seals on your intake valves. I wouldn't use the PC type seals because they can deprive the guide and valve of lubrication. Did you have new valve guides installed when the engine was rebuilt? sometimes machine shops will knerl the guides instead. knerling is ok, if the guide wasn't too bad to start with and the knurl job was done correctly. knurling will hold oil in the guide better for better lubrication. BUT, it doesn't last as long and if the guide was work verry much before the knurling, it wont be effective. Anyhow, the oil is coming from your intake valve guides, but if it is just puffing a little bit of smoke on start up and under hard throttling, I wouldn't worry about it unless it is fouling the plugs out. Just my 2 cents worth.

Bob - my rebuilt H does the same thing. I made sure I re-torqued the headbolts, re-adjusted the valve lash and checked compression on all 4 cylinders (120 psi)..everything is spot on! I think Steven@nd is right these old H's don't have stem seals and aslong as its not smoking after its been running a few seconds I wouldn't worry about it.

My freshly overhauled H does the same thing. As far as I can tell it is due to the lack of valve seals on these engines. When the engine is shut off some oil leaks through the valve guides and results in a puff of smoke when starting up. Mine will also smoke more when the engine is cold and throttling up. Once the engine is at operating temperature I don't get anything but a little black smoke when I pull it real hard.

I wouldn't worry about it.
Steven
