Is a magneto independent from the battery? So just the battery is used to turn the starter motor and eventually the cranks?

Can I fry a magneto?

If your tractor has a magneto, you don't need a battery for it to run. You can crank start or pull start it with no battery in there and it will run just fine. The only purpose of the battery when you have a magneto is to run the starter and the lights. Don't hook any wires to the Magneto except the one that goes to ground to stop the tractor. That wire just grounds the magneto through the shut off switch so it can't make a spark.

Bill, I hope all this good infomation and fun helps but just a note here, the small wire (usually) attached to a terminal on the side of the mag is used to shut down a running tractor by grounding it against the frame. I made the mistake of thinking voltage should be applied there. Wrong! The only thing I hurt was my pride when I found out what these other guys are saying, the mag makes it's own spark, good luck.

Hi Bill

Simple:

Do not connect anything to the magneto

It makes its electricity by itself

Frying is good. I have had them poached, baked and barbequed. Frying is best.

Sometimes when the funds are low and the debts are high, and the cupboards are bare (more often than not), I grab my trusty magneto and dump it in boiling water for magneto soup. Boiled magneto is the best.

You will not damage a magneto by using 12 volts to start a tractor.

A magneto doesn't use or depend on the battery. It is independant. Many older tractors did not have a battery, just a magneto and where started by hand cranking.
Magnetos are fairly rugged, but can be damaged. What do you mean by "fry"?

Fry - v. to burn it, blow it up, cook it, to destroy it with too much juice, wasting it.

Since the magneto produces the 'juice' for the spark plugs, I don't thing you're going to 'fry' it.
