My M has excessive movement in the gear shift lever. I pulled the cotter key, raised the spring and cap. It was full of dirty dried grease. I tried to drive out the cross pin and it wouldn`t move with what I thought to be enough force so I quit. Is there something else or did I quit too soon. I have been told if I remove the lever and build it up with weld on the end it will solve the excess motion. As usual all coments are greatly appreciated.

First, there is a soft plug on each side of the cross shaft. You have to get at least one of the plugs out first. They are bigger than the shaft and sit in a recess. A small sharp cold chisel can be used to dig them out.

Then the shift lever is spring loaded up. The cross shaft is probably worn with grooves in it. Push down on the shift lever while working the shaft with needle nose pliers and you will probably find it will come right out. It will take some jockeying around to find the right amount to push down to get the shaft free.

the pin should drive right out but could be rusted in. welding up the end of the lever is done to keep it from jumping the track and getting into two gears.
