Guys need advice here, how much voltage should be at the distributor, have SM, SH and 350U and they are all diferent, Like .5,(1/2 volt) on the H.
All are running through a resister, H and 350 are 12 volt and Sm is 6 volt.
Just tring to get it right so not to burn up points but have proper amount of voltage too.
Thanks guys .
Bob

What you see at the distributor depends on whether the points are open (6V) or closed (near 0).

Did you say the SM with a 6 volt sysytem has a resistor? That seems odd.

With the points open you'll see essentially battery voltage.

All American point ignition systems I know of run 6v at the coil. At the distributor, the circuit is just grounded through the points so the voltage there is just measuring point resistance.

On 12v systems you need a resistor or resistor wire. The resistor is internal to many 12v coils but not all, even though they are marked 12v. GM used resistor wire in the ignition circuit for many years so it is safe to buy a GM coil and put on an external resistor. If you are buying a new coil the seller should know whether it has an internal resistor.
