Super A Hydraulic Touch Control Guage not working

Hi. The hydraulic gauge is broken. So I ordered a "universal hydraulic guage". I had to adapt the thread size so it would screw into the reservoir. But to my dismay it reads 0 during hydraulic use. My guess is that the old guage is different enough that the new one won't work. The old one had a 2 inch cylinder that slid into the reservoir chamber and was attached by a copper wire. Never seen that on the new one. Any help would be appreciated.

What you took out was a temp gauge, not pressure, and it's a lot like the engine temp gauge. Takes a while of working the hydraulics to even budge it. Mine sat still for nine months, even through the limited plowing I had to do last winter. Took about six hours of mowing on a warm day and the needle never moved with the routine, occasional raising of the mower. It finally came up into the Run range after I'd done a good bit of lifting and dropping of the bar as I finished up the corners and a few odd spots that some other tractor drive must have missed. If you plan to use your system a lot, you'll probably want to get a new cover plate, gasket and gauge to mind the temp. As far as pressure, if you've got your control rods set up right, you shouldn't have to worry about it. If something does go wrong, you'll hear the system whining when the tractor is idling with no hyd. load. My .02. Scotty

Scotty,

It sounds like you know your touch control pretty well. I have a question or two myself.

I have a 100 with touch control. Must have run low on fluid and overheated it (the gauge on mine is unreadable too, and the pump started smoking when the tiouch control quit working.

I need some help finding the right repair schematics or manual before I dig into this. Any hints? E-mail me back at jrh3@ems.psu.edu

John

I appreciate your comments ScottyNY. I now understand that I purchased the wrong kind of guage as it measures hydraulic pressure. If there was a place to install it thats where it would go but from what you say it does not really matter anyway as the system does not whine...Of course if someone knows about a modification that allows hydraulic pressure measurement on the Super A I would be interested..
Thanks again...

you can put a pressure guage on the manifold where it goes into the rockshaft assy the small line is pressure and the big one is return you wont get a reading until you move the rockshafts as the hy oil just goes thru until you move a lever then you would read the hy pressure

Brad, I don't think you're going to get a good reading of the system pressure from that port in the screen retainer--it only opens into the reservoir and is not in line. The service book for touch controls has you checking the pressure over on the right side. As part of the set-up and diagnostics, they remove one of the set screws on that side to attach a test gauge. Might see of you can find the book (Binder, perhaps?) for details. Scotty

Scotty:
I will drop the idea until I hear about someone else who has already accomplished measurement of pressure. I jumped the gun when I bought the guage but am only out $20.00 and some time...Now I know what that old unreadable guage did. The new one can sit for a while.
