Is it firing at all. If it is blowing oil back out the air cleaner when you try to start on gas, you have the plug wires hooked wrong or the mag is 180 degrees out of time. Remember the rotation of the distributor button is COUNTER clockwise on these beasts. And if you have had the cover off the point chamber, it is easy to get the distributor 180 degrees out of time. There are only two lobes on the points cam, so there is 2:1 gearing between the cam and the dist rotor. Both of these situation will cause misfiring and blowing oil back out or the air cleaner. Don't ask how I know! Other than that, you have to check that gas is flowing and the carb is working, that the butterflys in the manifold are set correctly on the gas side, that the carb float is released in gas mode (Locked up to stop gas flow in diesel mode) and the the decompression valves are opening in gas mode. All this stuff is controlled by that one move of the starting switchover lever. Good Luck

Take off your valve cover and check the clearances to make sure that the starting valves are opening. You can take the cover off without really removing anything else. Make sure that you are getting fuel too. Does it smoke a lot when you are trying to run it on gas? If it smokes a lot of white smoke then diesel fuel is being injected while on gas. You also need to make sure that the butterflies in the intake are opening when on gas. There are quite a few places to check as you can tell. Hopefully it helps.

Bob - First thing I'd do is check the ignition timing. Sounds like maybe the ignition wires are connected wrong, or the distributor is way out of time. To check take the plugs out and lay the #1 plug on the block with it's wire connected. Now use your thumb to feel for pressure on the #1 plug opening as an assistant turns the crank (indicating #1 is coming up on compression stroke). Now turn on the ignition and continue to turn the crank while watching the timing mark for #1 TDC - you should get a spark almost exactly at TDC if it's timed/wired correctly. If not you've found the problem.

If the ignition checks out, THEN suspect a starting valve or manifold butterfly problem. Try cranking the motor a few seconds with the the starting lever in "start" position and the choke full on, then immediately pull a spark plug. If everything is working right the plug should be wet with, or at least smell of gas.

Good luck!
