M with a variable miss

My '44 M is tasking my knowledge on what to do to make her run smooth. She has for some time been running with a not too regular popping sound, seems like a backfire since it gives me a good 'klang!' from the weather cap on the muffler. So far I have put on new steel core wires, Champ. D21 plugs (she gets fairly light duty), a new coil, and ran some fuel system cleaner through her. I have also done a lot of fiddleing with the carb and adjusted the valves to .020 cold clearance. Nothing seems to help. It is time to bit the bullet and pull the head to get a direct view of what is going on? I've thought about the cap and rotor, but wouldn't a problem there make a regular miss instead of whenever miss? I've never put a head back on after pulling it so this is territory I'd rather not travel unless totally necessary. I'm rebuilding an H and had intended that engine to be my classroom on head, headgasket, and torque. Thanks for any and all info! -BTD

Take a good look at the distributor for wear or excess play.

BTD,

Sounds like your tractor might be out of time a small amount....My M had the same problem. I retimed the tractor, to check the tractor, use the hand crank and very slowly turn the motor over until you hear the impulse coupler snap. The pointer on the block should line up with the single notch on the crankshaft pulley...See if it works, you might need to re-time your tractor. Good luck,

Jared Jeffries

Sounds like a sticking valve or burned valve seat or both. A compression check might tell the tale. Let me know what you find.

Can I just go to Sears and get an automotive compression test tool or will it need to be something different? I'm always in the market for a new tool!
