I have purchased, and am in the process of shipping home, a generator set with a GM 2-53 engine on it. Are there any web sites like this one that have serial # and other info on their old stuff? I tried detroitdiesel.com, but that appears to be a restricted site for dealers. Thanks in advance -- Brian

I don't know about websites but my brother has a picture of a Detroit Diesel in his living room. His wife had to put a drip pan on the floor under the picture to catch the oil. They are the easiest engines in the world to change the oil, all you do is take a 5 gallon bucket of oil and pour it over the top. It will run in somewhere.

Thanks for the help guys -- I've heard the stories about them leaking like a sieve -- where are the trouble spots? Seals, gaskets, etc.?

Brian these engines have tubes that drain the blower air box.On a good sound engine there is not a lot of leakage from these tubes and a person is able to somewhat tell the condition of the engine based on this. These engines will run and make power even when very worn. They are well designed in that the in-line 71 series engines can be assembled in 6 different configurations. The crankshaft and head can go end for end, left or right hand rotation, camshaft can go end for end or either side of the block, blower can be set up right or left hand. They will run with heavy fuel and this is why the military used them in landing craft (D-Day) High hp for weight ratio. The V engines could be bolted together to form V 12 or V 16
