Farmall A motor locks up?

Weird thing happened yesterday actually two things on my 42 Farmall A:

1. it chuggged and lugged while starting it and black smoke came out of the exhaust. it never did that before. then it took a couple seconds to get up to power and rpms. I leave the sediment bowl valve open. Could it have been flooded? or maybe the gas is not good or getting old. Plugs look fine.

2. when I drove it, and then parked it in my shed, i shut it down. then wanted to see if it would restart like it always has. so i tried cranking it and it was stuck. the motor was stuck.

I tried the electric start and it wouldn't kick it over too. I put it in gear to rock it (3rd) and I couldn't budge it either. Maybe I should hae put it in first gear?

Then I went back to the handcrank and it would not turn the motor over at all then, something unstuck, and I was able to turn the motor and crank it for a normal start.

What's going on anybody have a clue?

Bill

what would cause the chugging and lugging and seeming loss of power at first?

black smoke out of the exhaust and it chugged, chuggged, chugged, chugged, and then chugchugchug, and then it finally got up to normal rpms? bad gas? it has never done this before. then it cleared up but still the tractor didn't seem to have the kick it usually had even in high gear.

I think I may have put some older gas in it but I can't remember if I put the old gas in from one of my cans that sat over winter

bill: So drain the tank. Note how much crud might be in it. If clean, put in 5 gal of fresh gas. You may have dirt in the carb. You also might have a float sticking that's causing it to be way too rich making it "chug",as you say, untill it's up to speed. Locking up still might be a starter hangup. Two seperate problems. bil: If it runs fine AFTER the 'chugging' upon startup, you may have gas dripping into carb while shutoff. Startup will be rich untill excess gas is burned off and then OK. To check this, turn off the fuel line and let engine die from running the carb dry. Then turn fuel back on only when starting the next day. G.

That's what I thought may be going on too.

Gotten out of the habit of turning off the gas and letting the engine run-out.

Question, if i let the engine run out, and I leave the ground out switch up, that should not cause or risk frying the points. Is that correct? Don't see how the points could fry if no curent is going through them like other non magneto electrical systems if the switch is left on. Just want to double check my stupidity.

thank you.

On my Super M leaving the switch on will kill the battery. The ammeter will actually read discharge while the switch is open.
I actually pull the pos cable every night when I'm done working, but the wiring on my tractor is shady at best.

Something is loose somewhere and comming out of place. I would try removing starter, could be faulty starter drive, is a easy one to check. If that is fine next place I would ckeck is governor and this will also give you a peak at timing gears. Check the easy items first, may save yourself a lot of work. Items inside engine don't usually free up. Don't over look clutch and presure plate. I am not much help, however on a couple of ocasions I have overlooked the easy one's and done a lot of work for nothing.

The starter bendix did that on my M a few times. The first time, I was heartbroken, thinking for sure the engine had "set-up." Being dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to mechanics, a neighbor had to tell me to loosen the starter and try the crank again. Boy, was I pleased to learn he was absolutely right.
