HOw hard is it to to repair the noise in my A rear end? I think my bearings in the transmission are going bad because I can feel the gears working inside and they are noisy. From what little I can tell, the noise is still there while in gear and going downhill but I haven't been able to tell if the noise is still there if I put it in neutral and coast downhill. But, I can still feel the gears working inside even in neutral. There is a groaning sound and the gear sound. I am not a mechanic and have basic tools that normal guys have. Do I need to split and remove the rear end and how can I tell what bearings are going bad from the drive shaft back to the drop housings? Do I need a bearing puller of some type or do they easily slide on and off? I have a noise back there that seems out of whack and I don't know farmalls enough to know whether it's normal or a quirk. A fella tractor enthusiast who has an Allis and JD LA and pulls with the Allis Chalmers knows tractors well, he took it for a spin and told me to dump it because the rear end bearings are going. He said that I got taken. I paid 2200.00 for it with some implements. The young man seller said it was a NICE tractor and assure dme the transmission was fine. it has all new tires all around and new rear rims and I repainted it and she looks really nice!!!!! ! I used Guy Fay's book for the correct decals too. the sheetmetal is really good. Lights are great and her motor is strong no smoke...until the chug start yesterday. I feel rotten if I got stuck with a bad tracotr. If I did, maybe I'll go back to Fords that I know better. I've already had to replacethe fan assembly becuase it fried itslef only after one hour of operation when I first got it. The strater switch needs replacing, the rear end leaks, it groans and is loud, and it doesn't hold a charge. I am souring on this machine really fast. Or, should I bite the bullet and problem solve the quirks? Has anyone ever been taken on a tractor deal?
