I have a farmall h and the inside of the gas tank is full of rust and crud. I was thinking of sealing the tank. and was wondering what is the best kind of sealant and where is it available, also how much sealant would I need? Is it absolutely necessary to take the gas tank off to put sealant in it? I tried flushing the tank out and I put naval jelly in it and let it sit for a week and then flushed it out. But there is still alot of junk in there. Any info would be appreciated! thanks Bob

I have been having trouble with a sealer that was used in my 10-20 tank. It is this purple colored stuff the guy at the radiator shop used and it is coming off the tank and sticking my needle valve in the carb. It is gooey and is a real mess now.I use this tractor a lot and I am not happy with that stuff at all.I should have just left it alone than have this trouble! The best stuff I ever saw used was a white colored coating. Coleman even uses it in their brand new camp stoves and lanterns, look inside one sometime( just be sure to use a flashlight and not a match!) I would check into it.Good luck

I used the POR-15 kit on a IH Scout tank. Just buy the kit and follow the directions. It is slicker than snot.

Don't dick around with a chain or nails or anything else, that might knock a big hole in the tank making it useless. The kit comes with a Metal Ready solution that will clean and etch the metal in the tank. The sealant will put a nice coating over everything inside. The scout tank was 10 gallons and I used 1/3 of the sealer in the can. It sould do your 20 gallon tank just fine.

Hint, I held a candle over the threads on the fuel sending unit screw holes. Filled the threads with wax to keep the sealer from sealing them shut. Not sure if these old tractors have a similar setup for the sender or not.

Thanks for the info! But I was wondering if any of the chemicals in the kit will take the paint off the outside of the tank? I was just thinking maybe some of the chemicals might splash on the outside of the tank whille dumping them out. The whole tractor has just been painted and i don't want to ruin a good paint job. thanks Bob

Metal ready is supposed to be relatively paint safe, but I was using it on my snowsled and some fell on a wooden plank underneith and raised the stain off of it. I'd be awful careful on a nice painted tank...
Still you gotta ask yourself, which is more important, repainting the tank or rebuilding the carb again, and again, and again.

I have a kit from POR15 to use on my snowmobile. I'm still having trouble cleaning the crud out of the tank, but the kit was relatively inexpensive, has everything you need and came really quickly. You might check out their site, they sell alot of really cool stuff.

I sealed the tank on my C with a product from Eastwood Company. It worked well and I have had no problems. However, I don't think the C has a baffle to complicate things. It will be essential for you to take the tank off the tractor to do a proper job. The sealer kit and required accessories is not cheap. The kit for Eastwood as I recall is $39.95 plus shipping. Then you have to buy a can of acetone and a bottle of muratic acid at a paint supply or home supply store. You also will need good heavy duty rubber gloves and eye protection and a way to dispose of residues. By the time you are done, you will have $70-80 invested. As I recall, the process is to do the chain, etc thing to break loose as much rust and crud as possible. Then you wash with soap and water, then you use the muriatic acid, and the metal cleaner and the metal prep (These come with the kit). Don't recall the order you do this. Then I recall you wash again with water and then you dry it out using the acetone. After all that you are ready for the sealer. To make sure every part of the tank is cleaned and finally sealed, you have to tumble (rotate) it so all surfaces are exposed and each step. You can't do that with the tank on the tractor. The end result I got was good and I've had no further problems with the tank on my C and that was more than a year ago.

Bob, The thing about cleaning a H gas tank is there is a baffle consisting of two metal ribs. One is attached to the bottom of the tank sticking up and the other is mounted on the top of the tank sticking down - they are about one inch apart and overlap one another. There will be just as much crud in the rear portion of the tank that you can't see as there is in the part you can through the fill hole. Small rocks (3/4 minus), a short section(s) of chain, etc will all help to knock the scale and rust free but you have to ensure you can get it all out of the entire tank. There are several products on the market to help you. Kreem and POR 15 are two of them. Auto Parts stores or Motorcycle shops sell kits. You'll need enough for about a 20 gallon tank. Radiator shops can also be helpful in steaming out the tank and then you can employ the sealer from a kit. Investigate all options and costs before hand and plan on taking the tank off of the tractor to do it right. Good luck.//FB

Bob: Sounds a little weird, but when this question came up a year or so ago, somebody suggested 1)take the tank off, 2)plug it, 3)put a double handful of roofing nails in the tank, 4)secure it to the wheel of another tractor, perhaps with bungee cords, and 5)use that tractor to cut a field of hay. At the end of the day, viola!, you've scoured the inside of the tank. And the answer is no, I didn't try it. I don't have a another tractor. But it's weird enough to work. Keep on wrenching red. Yep - I actually did that with the tank on my M, and it worked beautifully. A lot of work to get it clean, but when I was done, it was shinier than new -- then I dried and sealed it with sealer, and it has been running like a champ for the last 2 years...

You can seal the tank with soome amount of gunk in it, BUT the more there is, the more likely you are to have problems later - you'll have to make a judgement there.

Since you have new paint on the outside, you will need to be real careful taking it off -- there is no way to seal the tank without turning the tank over to get 100% coverage, and that is hard on the new paint while it is still on the tractor ;)

Good luck, Don(PA)
