I have a friend who has a 68 model 444 diesel. The 2-stage clutch chatters really bad when you let the pedal up and it engages pretty harshly. I'm assuming we'll try to replace the clutch this winter. Is there anything to be forewarned about?

That does not sound good! Does the noise stop once the clutch engages? If so, sounds like a bad clutch or two. That thing has one clutch IH part number 392-492-R91 for the PTO and one part number 399-536-R92 for the drive. My parts book shows that you could purchase the clutch facings separatly part number 392-495-R91. These part numbers are from a 1969 parts book. They may have changed. I wonder if some of the retracting springs have broken? That could give you the rattle. Maybe someone else has worked on these dual clutches. I could try to scan the parts book page if you would like and e-mail it to you.

I'll probably need it later this winter if he wants to tear into it. Thanks.

bg, can you tell if it is the PTO or the drive clutch chattering? Has the clutch been replaced recently? I have a 68 44 diesel also. I have never had a problem with the clutch, but I remember seeing in my manual that there is a set procedure for setting it up when you install it. Maybe it was never set up correctly.

This tractor was bought new in 1968. To get it into gear you have to idle the tractor all the way down and mash the clutch all the way to the running board. Then when you let it out in gear, it sounds like a coffee can full of bolts rattling. If you have it in neutral digging post holes, you have to hold the clutch pedal all the way down to get the PTO in gear, and as soon as you release the smallest amount of pressure from the clutch pedal(maybe 1/4-3/8" travel)the PTO starts turning, with the same noise.

as far as I know, this clutch is orginal. The tractor was never used for plowing, just utility work with a disk, bush-hog, etc., and has a loader for moving round bales.
