My father owns a diesel 560 International which over the past few days has started to smoke from (what he calls) the crankcase vent tube. The smoke comes out in puffs which seems to indicate that it is linked to one of the pistons. He also says it seems to have lost some power. He also mentioned that he changed the oil a couple of weeks ago. He has limited knowledge of a diesel engine and we would appreciate any advice from someone with an idea of what it could be.

Thanks,

It is most definitely blowby, and by the way you describe it "coming in puffs", I would guess that one piston/sleeve is having problems that developed all of a sudden, rather than all of the recieving gradual wear, because in that case there would be a fairly solid stream of air coming out the vent. So either cracked rings or a bad sleeve would sound right to me..... but one of you diesel gurus should help here, I am not the most qualified person around and don't claim to be either...

it could be worn/broken rings or a cracked sleeve which is letting compression into the crankcase. my 460D had 4 cracked sleeves and had alot of blow by.
