I have been told to use either champion D21 or autolite 386 sparkplugs, Which one is the best? Also I was wondering if I should use lead substitute in my gas? Also I was wondering if I should use stabilizer because I don't even run a whole tank through in a year. Is it okay to use both stabilizer and lead substitute? Any comments would be apprecaited! Thanks Bob

I will not get in the sparkplug brand debate but the stabilizer is a good idea. I also put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in with the gasoline for upper engine lube ie. valve guides and etc. if it's actually needed. If your tractor only sees light duty service then I would also recommend one step hotter range on the plugs.

I have been using D15Y plugs in my H. Is this ok? or should I change to the D21 or something similiar in another brand? Use the tractor to disc, brushhog and sometimes operate a fruit sprayer. -RayA

I make a living as a mechanic and I am far from knowing it all! But I will say I don't like champion plugs. I've used A/C plugs in all my vehicles. Autolite would be better than champion even. I'm sure i'm stirring up a debate but we've all got an opinion. The lead additive you talk about is not needed but I would use the stabilizer.

I agree with Bill. Use the gasoline stabilizer, it should actually be used if you only go through a tank of fuel in a month! Either way it will prevent varnish and gum from clogging your carb and it will run better also - stale fuel does not contain the oxygen that fresh fuel does. Lead substitute is a waste of money in any engine! It has been proven that even engines that were designed for lead run fine without it.

As for the plugs, how long do you use it when you start it up? Do you always warm the motor to operating temperature? If you don't fully warm the engine when you use it you should change oil more often due to condensation - water in the oil turns it into an acid that can eat the bearings. If you only use the tractor for short periods and have ever had trouble fouling plugs, go with the Champion D19 - that is what I use in my other tractor for winter use or else it fouls plugs. For normal use go with the Champion D21 I've had good luck with them.

D-21 Champion is the REALLY HOT HOT plug... Champion's other Hot plug is a D18.... still hotter than the D-16 IH recommended when these old girls ran everyday all day. I'm still using an old set of D-15Y's in My Super H. Colder plug but with extended tip to center spark in combustion chamber.... Supposed to Help HP a little... and the Old Girl needed ALL the help She could get! Champion also makes a D-9... really cold plug.

I use the Champion D-21, but either one should be "OK".
Forget the lead additive, it isn't needed if you do not use a tank of fuel in a year. Unleaded fuel will not do any harm to your exhast valves, or seats, even if you used much more fuel than this. Use the fuel stabilizer, it is well worth the trouble.

Thanks for the advice! I just got a kit from POR-15 to seal my fuel tank and it came with stabilizer. The bottle has measuring marks on it in onces. But I'm not sure how much I should use? Does anyone have any approximate amount I should use? Thanks Bob

From the POR15 website, and this should be marked on the bottle too
"1oz per 3 gallons normal maintenance, 1oz per gallon to thoroughly clean your fuel system."
In your case I'd probably go something like 1oz per 2 gallon and try to burn the old fuel out pretty soon. I usually only put in about 5 gallons at a time unless I know I'm going to use it so that I don't get a ton of extra gas that sits for a long time.

I've also bought the POR15 gas treatment. I haven't tried it yet, last mowing at the farm this year will be the second week in september so all 3 lawnmowers, the weedwhacker, 2 chainsaws and the Super M will get treated then. Since both snowmobiles are pulled apart right now neither has gotten treated, those will get a dose next spring probably right after the results of the farm tests come in.
