My tractor has excessive steering play. Is there an adjustment for this? If so how and where can it be done?

There are no adjustments, except to make sure everything is tight. Sometimes the center steering arm gets loose on the steering gear shaft. It's held on by a nut that is really hard to get to, but if you can move the center arm up and down, then it is loose and you need to tighten it up. Also, the tie rod joints can be tightened up, but the balls on the tie rods tend to wear to oval shape and if you tighten the screws in the ends of the socket retainers, it may be too tight when you turn sharp. Check the steering wheel to see if the shaft has any back and forth play. If you can move it any in the direction of the steering shaft, then you need to replace the worm shaft bearing. This is done by taking out the big plug in the front of the steering box and screwing out the worm gear far enough to take out the cotter key and then take off the castle nut and then the ball bearing will come off and you can replace with a new one. This is about all you can do short of a complete overhaul which will require removal of the front axle so you can dissassemble the box and replace bearings, bushings, seals and so on.

Thanks for the answer. It looks like I've got a big job ahead of me. Might put it off until the weather is a little cooler here in mid Georgia
