Hi. I recently purchased what I believe to be an A or Super A. So far I haven't been able to find a legible serial #. Is their anything that would be distinctive or specific to either of these tractors to help identify it? I'm really new to this and any help would be greatly appreciated. I've read back posts about serial # location- I've read to look above the first spark plug and around the seat mounting. Any other ideas? Again, thanks in advance for your help. Bob

That engine serial is below no.1 plug not above. As to what Dave has said, many As have had makeshift hydraulics added, a few SA have had it removed or never had hydraulics. The torque tube between clutch housing and transmission is round on A. On SA it has a flat top to acomodate the factory touch controll hydraulic system. All As had mag ign, I have never seen a SA with mag ign.

They are out there Hugh. My 48 SA had a mag but I switched it to a distributor. I think a lot of it depended on what the local dealer ordered. around here I would say about 1/3 of the A,B,C's I've seen have mags.

I don't doubt you, and that part of post was only intended as a rough guide. If it has coil-distributor good chance it is a Super. I have yet to see a Super A with mag. It is the same with torque tube, who is to say 50 years later it hasn't been changed. There have been some remarkable contraptions put together using parts and components from two or more tractors.

Hey I know what you mean. I frequent the Ford 8N board. A fellow over there says that half of them had some type the sherman aux transmission. 8N's are thick here and I have yet to see an sherman trans. It was a what the local dealer wanted. Kinda interesting how tractors differ from area to area.

The easiest way to tell is hydraulics.
Nearly every Super A has factory live hydraulics, but no straight A's do.
Look under the gas tank for the control unit, the pump will be on the right hand side of the engine, just below the magneto or distributor. Piping will connect the two, if it is there.
