Farmall H poofing sound in exhaust?

I recently rebuilt the motor in my H. Rebuilt the carb too. When it is idling it has a slight poofing sound from the exhaust. Also after being at idle then pulling the throttle up it has a slight puff of smoke out the exhaust then clears up. I was thinking maybe a carb adjust but the only screw that seems to do anything is the idle stop screw. The other two can be turned all the way in or out and don't seem to make a difference. I did retorque the head and readjust the valves. New spark plugs gap set at .025. The sound doesn't seem to effect the performance but I want this thing to run as good as possible after all the work I put into it. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Bob

The H cylinder head does not have valve stem seals and a little oil may getting by. Also, until the rings seat better at break-in, you may get a little oil consumption.

Bob retard your timing about 5 degrees. What color is the smoke?

The smoke is a blueish color. My tractor has a mag, so would I just turn the mag like I would a dist.? Would I turn the mag cw or ccw? Thanks Bob

As Red Raider mentioned, those rings are not broken in yet.

If you haven't since overhaul, I would retorque the head. Before you do that, check the clearances on the valve stems. Don't be surprised if the clearance is at zero on a couple of valves as they get reseated. I had that problem on an H 3 years ago on a rebuild. It took about 20 hours to get the #1 exhaust valve seated and the clearance would hold.

I have retorqued the head and adjusted the valves and only two valves were off a little bit. I would say I only have about 5 hours on the motor. Just driving around no heavy pulling. When should I start working the motor? How hard should I work it. Do you think it is normal for it to smoke when the throttle brought up from idle? It does it even after it is up to operating temp. Thanks again! Bob

Bob: Every so often there is a question about how soon an engine should be worked after an overhaul. I'll guess most would agree 5 hours is almost too much to NOT have worked it some by now. Working it adds temp and pressure to help seat those rings. So yes, work it some to get temp up and then back off a bit for a while and then repeat. Check archives for prior replys. I'll guess this is a typical responce. John Q.

Thanks for the advice. I am trying to figure out what I could Pull because I don't have any implements for the tractor. I was thinking of maybe pulling my ford 8n around for awhile. This weekend i am taking it to its first tractor show. they have a sled there that they use to demostrate a tractor pull. its not that heavy because some I've seen people use farmall c's to pull it. Do you think it would be to soon for me to try and pull with my H? I don't want to damage anything! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks Bob

Bob: With good care, a Farmall H engine could be run 5000 hours so your 5 hours isn't much yet. A steady load to get all internal parts up to FULL operating temp with a slow decrease in load to cool down would be nice. Pulling in 1st gear should help a little bit. Most farmers would just go out to the field and work it because they needed to earn a living. You need a 100 acres of plowed ground to disk up several times as a start? Good luck. John
