My Neighbor is giving me an offer that I really can't refuse. He is selling his 1972 1066. It has a cab, heat and a/c. He is offering to me for $3,500. I am A deere guy and am not too familiar with IH tractors except for the ones my neighbor runs. He has owened it since it was new. It has been a reliable tractor. Just about everything went out on my JD 4630 and it seems to make more sence to buy this tractor than spend more money to fix my deere. I would like to know a little bit about this model before I bought it.
Thanks

Thanks guys! I am going over to his place tomarrow to close the deal! I am convinced it is a great tractor for a great price. I have used the same tractor when my John Deere was down so many times. He bought a bigger tractor and needed the space. He knew that I could put it to good use in my fields. Insted of trading it in he came over and offered it at a price that I will not refuse. I guess it is a good thing I have such generous neighbors.

Good tractor and the price is real good , if you don't want it i'll take it and i don't even care if the clutch and T/a are out for that money . A few thinks to keep and eye on are the clutch and dump valve and trans brake adjustment keep good oil and filters on it and run the bag off it and you will like the better fuel economie that the 414 will give ove the 4630 and the power differance might not be noticeable if it has been tweeked a bit it my even have a bit more, I have a couple that are setting around 225 hp.

I once loaned my 1066 to a neighbour that had a 4630. Forage Harvester work. At time his Deere had 500 hours on clock, 1066 had over 8,000 hours. When he brought it back I asked how it worked for him. His comment,"It makes the damn Deere look sick."

Go Grab It ASAP !!!!! !!!!! !

It is a great price. Value is about $10,000 to $11,000 in good shape.

So, you can't go wrong. You can always resell it at a later date if a problem develops (Which isn't likely)

Real Power house! 125 stock hp, but most folks turn up the pumps to get 160 hp which hasn't hurt any of the 1066's I have seen.

my god thats cheap!!!, up around here (northeren vermont) a good deal is one under $10,000 thats in good shape. Wow and A/C too!. If I was you, I'd go right over and try it out if you haven't all ready and close the deal before anyone else buys it out from under you. And make sure that T/A is strong, it's the only lever on the left hand side, up is high and toward you is low, if it's bad you can plan on spending $1,000+ to get it fixed and my bosses 1466 had to be split 3 times for it's new T/A.

That's a very good price! We run a 966, which is similar to the 1066, with the big differences being that the 966 isn't turbocharched, and has a smaller clutch and brakes. The one thing I don't like is the cab during the summertime, but the one you're looking at has a/c, so that won't be a problem. I think that the 56 and 66 series were the easiest-shifting tractors IH built. That 414 engine will pull like you can't belive. Just make sure to take good care of the cooling system/water filter, to avoid the problems Hugh mentioned, and you'll have a good, trouble-free tractor.

I bought a new 1066 with cab, air, duals and front weights in 1975. I was a very good tractor, rated if I remember correctly in the 125-130 hp range. I had it on dyno 3-4 times over years, it always put out 160 hp and it was never tampered with. It came from the factory that way. On 890 NH Forage Harvester it would fill a 24 x 70 silo in 24 hours, as long as you had the equipment to take the material away.

Only real problems I ever had were deterioration of sleeves causing holes thus an engine job. The other item was front end. I blamed that on the duals and pulling large discs and cultivator. Duals tend to make tractor go straight ahead, awfully hard on front end. If I were to ever buy a tractor over 100 hp again I would put 4wd with the duals. I think they would be fine as a 2wd if they had 20-24 inch tires on front. 16 inch wheels and front end very vulnerable if it drops in hole, even a dead furrow.

J, I've never owned one but I know a lot of people who have. They are a good tractor and a stud horse at that. It's priced right to boot! Good luck
