I just put a new muffler on my H from tractor supply. I ran the tractor only about 10 minutes and the paint on the muffler is already bubbling and peeling off! Is the paint supposed to peel off this fast? I would think it should last a little longer than that. Also is it normal for a newly rebuilt H to have some blue smoke come out the exhaust almost constantly? The motor only has a couple of hours on it and has never been worked. The head has been retorqued, valves readjusted and oil changed. I am hoping it is smoking because it hasn't been worked and just needs broke in. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks Bob

I got my muffler from case dealer and it hasn't peeled at all. Sounds good too!

well the muffler problem sounds about right ,,the paint burns off pretty fast,, as for the blue smoke I would say it may be the prelube from the rebuild .....should stop in a while....Jim

You might have to much gas going in the motor. Did you have new rings put in?

Blue smoke does NOT indicate too much gas, black smoke would be too much gas. Blue smoke is oil burning off.

As for the blue smoke, 2 hours on the motor is not long enough to have the rings even BEGIN to seat. I have 25 hours on my rebuild and it is still not fully broke in. I still get a puff of blue smoke when starting for about the first 20 to 30 seconds. These engines will always have that puff of smoke on start up because there are no valve seals.

If you don't have anything to pull to break your tractor in, drive in road gear slowly and accelerate, then slow down again. That will apply a load to the engine and help to seat the rings.

And WHY does everyone change the oil so soon after rebuild? Do you guys put dirt in the engine when you rebuild it? I have 25 hours on mine and the oil is as clean as it was out of the barrel!! Read the owner's manual, I don't think it says change the oil every 2 hours on your new tractor!

And as far as the muffler is concerned, even the new CaseIH mufflers aren't very good when it comes to the paint burning off. They just don't make them like they used to, boys.

Just my opinions here folks, take them as you wish.

Steven

Changing oil to flush out the very small metal flakes from new parts wearing in to each other such as piston rngs etc. The Red explained this in his archive story of his rebuild of his Farmall H.

Yes, the whole motor was rebuilt, pistons, rings, sleeves, valves, guides, carb rebuilt, mag rebuilt. I hope it is just a carb problem! I have taken the carb apart 4 or 5 times because the needles don't seem to do anything but I still can't get it right. Thanks Bob

I'd talk to them at where you bought the muffler about the paint problem. I've got about 5 hrs. on a freshly rebuilt H. I get just a puff at start up but she runs clean after that. I haven't worked this tractor either. I live in the city and don't know how i'm gonna work it. Breaking it in some more will probably cure the smoke but i'm no expert and will be watching to see what other ideas the guys (and/or gals)have to say. Good Luck

I have the same problem in reguards on how to work the motor so it will set the rings etc. I came up with this idea. I am going to hook a chain up to my Ford PSD and drag it around while the wife slows me down in gear and some occational breaking only Idea with available options as I have no plows etc. No trees to try to up root just catus and brush and crud like that. But remember its a dry heat out here ha ha lol
