I have a 1941 "A" and a 1942 "A", just noticed the other day that the PTO shafts are different, and the whole housing for them is different shaped, too. Somehow I figured all "A"s were the same front to back....not so???

Yep, the larger PTO shaft is to meet ASAE standards. You can install a 1-3/8" PTO shaft in the tractor with the smaller one. Somewhere early in the life of the A Farmall there was a part number change of the PTO casting and maybe the belt pulley casting. Maybe your tractors cross that serial number change???? My 1942 A has the small shaft (and the later casting numbers) but I have a large shaft to install in it soon. IH offered a kit to change from the 1-1/8" PTO shaft to the 1-3/8" shaft. That kit might have included the adaptor plate (in addition to the PTO shaft) that I see on some A and B farmall tractors but I don't know for sure.

All tractors go through a continual improvement before, during, and even after production. Same holds true for just about any major manufactured product. What you are seeing might be the changes in the PTO to meet the ASAE standards for PTOs that were put into place about that time, so that implements from one manufacturer might be used with tractors of another manufacturer without adapters.
