Would it be possible for a 1942 farmall h to not have been equipped with 5th gear. I am asking because I can not seem to find the 5th gear lockout screw. My tractor was my grandfather's who bought it brand new and it was on steel, no lights or electric start, no pto, no belly pump. i was just wondering if maybe 5th gear was another option that you had to pay more money for. Does anyone have a picture of the top plate of the tranny cover, so I could see where the lockout bolt is? Thanks Bob

the reason that 5th gear is locked out was because of the steel wheels.(speed to fast in high for safety reasons

The lockout was used on the steel wheel versions of the H.

I think the bolt is in a depressed place in the top plate and looks like one of the top plate hold down bolts.

The lockout bolt is slightly left and forward of the gearshift lever base by about 6". When you swing the gearshift over to the right and then down for 5th., the bottom of the gearshift is going left and trying to push the 4th./5th. gearshift fork forward. The bolt is a stop which prevents that fork from sliding forward.

I tried removing the bolt you and Hass told me about but the shifter will not go all the way into gear. If i shine a light down the bolt hole you can see something moving when I try to shift into 5th (can't see anything move if i shift it into any other gear) I pull the shifter down as far as it goes and i am still able to roll the tractor like it is in neutral. I don't know if something is stuck or what. I don't want to pull to hard. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

I have been up to my armpits in this one. Yank off the Belt pully Assembly, BEFORE you decide on pulling the tranny cover or Shifter Lever.

The whole shooting match can be seen from the large rectangular hole left by the Belt Pully Assembly. As you then work the shifter, you will be able to see the 4th/5th gear trying to do it's job. You will also be able to see a fair amount of the gears in there and what they look like.

Grab the upper tranny shaft and shake it a time or to so as to check the pilot bearing and others. The inner gear surface on the 4th/5th gear may be damaged so bad you will not be able to get it in 5th. Hopefully not for your sake. That gear is 130 dollars new and darn difficult to find used in usable condition.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Bob - Try this: Remove the shift lever (drive out the 3/8" dia shift lever pivot pin just beneath the lever dust cover, then lift the lever free). Peer inside the opening and you will see the 3 shifter rails. Take a big screwdriver and engage the slot on the LEFT shifter rail. Now slide the rail as far forward as it will go. It should lightly "snap" into a detent at the end of it's travel. If the rail doesn't move easily, rock the tractor slightly or bump the starter until you feel it drop in.

With the left shift rail in it's full forward position now try if 5th gear works. If it does the problem is a worn/bent lower end on the shift lever. It can usually be corrected by building up the bottom tip of the lever with weld, then grinding it back into shape.

If 5th gear still doesn't work, problem's a worn direct (5th gear) sliding gear clutch or a worn 4-5 shift fork - time to pull the top of the tranny for a look inside.

Good luck!
