Diesel 400 distributor

I am trying to debug a problem with the gas side of the engine on a 400 diesel. Runs fine on diesel but rough on gas. I put a timing light on while running on gas and the timing mark moves quite a bit. If the autoadvance in the distributor has a broken spring or is worn out would this cause poor running on gas? Thought I'd ask in case anyone else had a similar problem.
Thanks for your help, in advance.

If you are referring to a 400 Diesel, there should be no advance in the dust.

Les, there is an auto advance only advances 8 deg. There are 2 fly weights with a weird shape, 2 springs etc. Yes, we are talking about a diesel. Took the whole thing apart last night that was not the problem. I'm going back to checking the carb for the 3rd time. I'm starting to get a bit frustrated. It runs on gas but not as well as it should.

Alex - I had a similar difficulties with an IHC pickup (304 V8). Problem turned out to be a badly worn distributor shaft bushing. It let the shaft wobble around inside the distributor which messed up the point gap and caused the timing to jump all over the place. That in turn caused the motor to start hard and run poorly. Rebushing the distributor and replacing the distributor shaft cleared it right up.

Suggest removing the distributor rotor from your 400 and check to check for radial play in the distributor shaft. If you detect any play at all you likely have found the problem.

Note - A broken spring in the advance could cause poor running too, but would not make the timing jump all over.

Hope this helps...
