On my H if you push in the clutch and bring the tractor to a complete stop, then try to shift the gears they grind a little bit. If I keep it stopped with the clutch in for a few seconds then it won't grind. It has a new clutch in it.Is this normal for an H? Thanks Bob

This sounds normal to me, they were not a synchromesh transmission and not made to shift on the go, you can shift up or down but some gear clash is normal.

Bob if your tractor has working Liftall try depressing clutch and pulling liftall handle before shifting. This will load clutch and stop transmission many people habitually did this back when these tractors were used for full time farming. 1 inch free play sounds about right to me.

Bob how far out do you let the clutch and the transmission is engaging? I am speculating that the long rod on the clutch pedal will have to be adjusted.

I am not sure but I would say that it has about an inch of free play before the clutch starts to grab. Do you know what the spec is? Thanks Bob

I would lengthen the rod about 2 full turns. It shouldn't engage until the clutch pedal is up about 1 1/2" from fully depressed.
