I hope somebody can make out what I'm saying. Can't say anything to my husband ,he is hospital, and I don't want to upset him. I went out and tyed to start our 1959 H. At first I thought I just flooded it. BUt when I got off I seen that the gas is pouring out of the choke lever in a stedy stream. When it is open it's worse thatn when it is closed. Gas is dripping off the bottom of the carb. I shut the gas of at the sed. bowl. Got out his shop manual and owners manual. But couldn't find anything to help me. I need to use this tractor to get the work done. Untillmy husband can do it. I really don't want to say anything he will just worry and he doesn't need that. any help would be wounderful thanks.

Hey Thanks a million to you guys. I took your advise. By the way it is a 1950. Thanks to you guys I was able to get it started. Sorry I didn't write sooner. I had a lot of hay to get in before the weather. My husband came home last night. It will be a few weeks 'till he's up and around. I did tell him about the problem. He did know about it. He thought it was pretty funny. Got a big kick out of the fact, I was so worried I broke it. Turns out that our 6 year old knows about it. And he also knows to turn off gas let it set, than start it. I was the last one to run it & didn't know to turn gas off when done. Well, just want to thank you guys so much, again. Take care! Becky

You didn't do any major damage. Most H's and M's will do that if you crank on them for a while and use too much choke. It will stop when running. At the most it needs a carburator overhaul. At the least it will run for a long time like that. I'm sure your husband already knows about it.

Sounds to me like you either choked it way to much or the float valve inside carb is not seating or is stuck open. If choking to much is the case let tractor sit for a few hours and try to start it without choking. Gas should quit flowing out of the holes in a minute or two and will be more of a drip instead of a flow. There is a fuel shut off valve under the gas tank. If choking isn't the problem shut this valve off. Wait untill gas quites running out of carb. Then start tractor and let it run for about 45 seconds and then turn the gas valve back on. Sometimes running the engine will shake the float valve loose so that it will seat properly. Sometimes really light taps with hammer on the carb will shake it loose too. If gas starts running out of carb with tractor running shut the tractor off or if you don't the engine will soon flood itself out and die. If this all fails the carb will probably have to be taken apart to be inspected and fixed. And your H isn't a 59. They quit making H's in early 50's and they only made super H's for a short while and quit making them in mid 50's.

Why hassel the lady on age of tractor, you helped like everyone else, don't throw that jab at her. An H, is an H, is an H, is an H and she really only wanted to get it going for some little chore. And Becky we admire your spunk, take the advise and try again tomorrow.

I didn't think I was hasseling the lady here, Hugh. I thought I was giving her some pretty good instruction myself. My little remnents of advice might not work on newer tractor if she was unclear on model, as well as year.

Bill: It has been a couple of days since I read the 5 or so original posts. The advise given was good by all. I thought yours was one of the better worded ones. To me the year didn't matter, and probably model didn't either. As a matter of fact make probably didn't matter. I have friends with other makes Cockshutts, Olivers, etc. The advise on this gas leaking problem is always same.

Sorry to hear about your husband.

Has the H been run recently?
Did you open the sediment bowl valve before cranking or was it already open?

Becky, It sounds like the float in the carb. is sticking to me!Quick fix 9 out of 10 times= take the handle of a screw driver and smack the carb a few times not to hard but hard enough to let it know ya mean business!Make sure gas is on when ya do this and see if it stops. If no luck try 1 more thing shut gas off,Remove square head set screw on bottom of float bowl( on carb) let excess gas drain out and spray carb.cleaner up in the float bowl assembley let excess cleaner run out, reinstall set screw and turn gas back on.I hope it helps.
