After talking with a few of you guys on here over the past year I have finally reached the end of messing around with my 706 gas. A year ago it started fouling plugs. I put hotter plugs in it. Worked for a while. It was also starting to drink oil by the gallon. With the hot plugs it kept going. Well, now a year later it drinks oil and runs on 4 or 5 cylinders. I was able to pull a planter and cultivate this spring, but something has to happen before harvest. What do you guys think is wrong? The engine had new sleeves, pistons and rings no more than 200 - 300 hours ago. Since it burns oil so bad that would indicate rings. I am not so sure that a valve is gone now too. Can I get by with reringing it since the pistons and sleeves do not have that many hours on them ... also redue the head? What else should I check for? Any ideas are helpful.

I'd run a compression check on the engine first... Pull all the spark plugs, check compression warm or hot if possible... than as most good tune-up/trouble shooting manuals say put a teaspoon of oil in each cyl. and re-check. Determines if it's rings or valves. Rings will seal better and compression will increase but a leaky valve won't. May save You some $$$$ & time from tearing something down that isn't necessary.

It doesn't matter what color your tractor is or what brand parts you used, the premature wearout that you are discribing is most likely caused by a leak in the air intake system. A small intake leak will let dirt into the cylinders and this dirt will work like sandpaper on your any moving part it touches. I would check every part of the intake system from the filter to the manifold gaskets. Look inside the air route to see if there is a dirt trail. Also, when cleaning any of these parts, do not sandblast. Sandblasting can leave sand particles, especialy in manifold castings, that will be carried to the cylinders. I would check for wear on the sleeves, pistons, rings, valves and valve guides. Good luck, I hope this helps in some way.

I would like to know what manufacture of pistons and sleeves you put in. Case IH, TRW, Clevite, etc should stand behind their product since the limited use the engine has had after the rebuild. I know that the Tisco and CT kits have a high rate of problems/failures.. Call the manufacturer of the kit and see what they will do for compensation. Do this before you disassemble the engine, because a rep may be sent to investigate...

Thanks guys for your suggestions. Will do the compression check first - hot - with and with/out oil in the cylinders. andy
