Farmall H wont charge. Could it be a ground problem?

I recently finished a restoration on my Farmall H.
Now the generator won't charge the battery. I had the generator & regulator (cutout relay) checked. They work fine. Brand new OEM wiring harness, battery, 1 ga. battery cables, and Rochester ammeter. Everything electrical is either brand new, rebuilt, or checks out fine. Could I have a ground problem because of all the new paint on the tractor? The machines former owner said I have to make sure the ammeter is grounded to the switch box for the system to work. Does this sound right? Everything else electrical works fine; headlights, tailight, starter, engine ignition, etc. Please help if you can.

You could try grounding the generator field terminal and if the generator and ammeter are good and correctly hooked up, it should charge.

What the former owner should have said is the ammeter BOX must be solidly grounded for the system to work. Try running a temporary ground wire from the light switch mounting bushing nut (the nut behind the knob) to the grounded battery terminal. If that solves the problem, either install a permanant ground wire here, or else clean to bare metal the mating surfaces between the light switch and the ammeter box cover, between the cover and the box, between the box and the steering post, and between the steering post and the tranny cover.

I also want to say there is no wire from the ammetter to the switch box to ground it.

Yes you need to make sure that at all wire connections you are contacting to are metal to metal not to the paint.
You also need to polarize the generator, so that the currnet flow is right. If you do not do this your ammetter will not show a charge. There has been a lot of talk about this in the past week on this board.
